How long I have been a photographer? Professionally for 7 years. Personally? I took my first photography course when I was 10 years old.

Where I live... Vancouver, BC Canada

A piece of equipment that I could never part with... my 85mm and 1.8 lens. I use it for everything!

The advice I have for photographers who are just getting started.. Get out and shoot! Seriously, whether you are self taught or you have been to school, you only really find your way in photography by taking pictures. Get out there and break every rule you have ever been taught, try something different or unique.  And then go back and do it all again.

Something that is overrated.... which camera you use. The camera doesn't take the picture, that photographer does. Sure, a nice camera helps but give a good photographer a bad camera and I bet they still make an amazing image.

A helpful tip that is useful... look for light everywhere. What I know... that I have the best job in the world. What I know that I didn't know then... that is job is really hard work.

Jack's Trip Around the World

** Jack is in Kentucky visiting Amber & Troy Schmidt of www.atsphoto.com For those of you who don't know "Troy" is BluDomain's 2006 Guy of the Year.

** Jack was in attendance at his first wedding.  He did appear to have the bride's full attention. 

 

 

"Renovation" set to launch on Friday.  Interface 24 is still under construction so I can't post any new visuals until the final 3 sections are completed which is the contact section, video gallery and the homepage.  Sophisticated and lovely!

Video will be an add-on cost of $150.00. 

To tell you a little history about the new interface:  This original site was constructed in the year of 2001.  Influenced by modern art and Sean Combs (a.k.a Puff Daddy) known for his strictly enforced "white" dress code yacht parties.  The original site www.bludomainhosting.com/photography1 was originally designed in white with a splash of color.  The design: clean, fresh yet classy.  Over the years BluDomain evolved as did technology.  Fans from around the world stood in lines in to see this masterpiece as it was the first time they had ever heard of BluDomain.  The interface sold by the hundreds and made many creative individuals very happy!  They never forgot about the interface that set BluDomain on this wonderful journey.  We never forgot the interface that made us famous.  (hehe) and so Friday the renovation will be complete:

More galleries, more text sections, bigger images, new color functionality (and yes you can choose unique colors per image), client proofing, video capabilities,  1-3 song jukebox,  main navigation will be adjustable (** first for Blu) and overall improvements on the back-end administration and 22nd century animation.

Friday we remember the "the first days" we put the BluDomain sign in the door. $600.00 for 2 days only!

**Well we are happy to say bludomain5.com is almost back to BluDomain standards.  "The disaster"  is out of emergency state.  BluDomain has received so many e-mails, phone calls from people who understand what it's like to go through a disaster of some kind.  We again want to say sorry for anyone that had to endure these painful hours. BluDomain worked effectively in finding the problem, working non-stop for 48 hours with hosting to make sure everything went smoothly as possible, to restore all sites off of back-ups, contacting clients, working one by one to make sure all interfaces were working properly, restored many files, offered apologies along the way, offered 2 months of free hosting to all accounts,  and are now going through auditing of servers to make sure bludomain5.com is reliable and that this never happens again.  BluDomain is going forward to continue to offer a great product and a reliable hosting server.  There are some people who wish to join the anti-BluDomain mafia and to you we believe it's not really how you go down it's how you recover and we feel 100% that we have did our best to make this as painless as possible for all clients.   (although the doctor did prescribe the team Vicodin) Please keep in mind this could happen to anyone on any server at any time.  We could not have done anything to prevent this when technology fails us all we can do is pick up the pieces and rebuild.

Today we announce that interface 25 will have a proofing section.  Upload as many clients and images as you would like. Each client can have a password protected entrance and will be able to view their images in an internal gallery environment.

** "Jack" the gnome is on his way to Kentucky to live with the Schmidt's for a week.  Today I took him to the UPS for his departure.  He will travel all over the world, he already has friends in the UK, India, Japan, Italy, Phillippines,  Australia and more...  If you would like Jack to visit you e-mail me at kailee@bludomain.com

** Yesterday was no fun at BluDomain.  We all drank 5 shots of tequila when the work clock said "Go Home"   One of our servers had been acting up for days now intermittenly and today it went kaplunk for way too long.  What happened?  Cpanels were upgraded last week and for some reason one server did not take well to the upgrade.  After 24 hours of working with 7 different technical guys the issue has been resolved.

When technology fails it's no fun for anyone. We assure everyone that some Blu team members pulled all nighters and didn't go home or too sleep to keep an eye over the server and those working on it.  If only you could see how digently the team at BluDomain works you would have a new appreciation for the labor beyond the creativity.

My name: Tim Schooler

How long you have been a photographer... I was 10 when I got my first camera, a Polaroid Swinger. That was all it took, I had the bug. But as far as a career path, I've been doing it professionally for about 20 years.

Where I live: Lafayette LA

A piece of equipment that I could never part with.. I think  if I absolutely had to, I could do without pratically anything I use daily on a regular basis with the exception of a camera and lens.  A lot of tools are for convenience and many can be substitued for. But if I had to pick one I would hate to part with it would be my 70-200 2.8 L lens. It's my favorite for most of the work I do.

My advice for photographers who are just getting started.. is to take things slowly, not to be in a great rush to go into business. Immerse yourself in the craft, learn as much as you can. Those who  do this will ultimately be far more successful I think than those who rush into it and aren't doing top notch work. I worked at it part time for many years until I felt I was ready. Even today I still think it is not so much a destination but a journey.

Something that is overrated... emphasis on brands. i think Ansel Adams would have created art no matter what medium he chose to work in. I see so many discussions, and arguments on some of the photography forums about this brand or that brand. We all have preferences. But cameras and lenses are tools just as a brush is to a painter. When you find a combination that works well, it doesn't matter what name is on it if it works well for you and gets the job done.

What I know.. we can never achieve perfection, but only work at doing the best we can.

What I know now that I didn't know then.. It's an old saying, but my grandfather used to always say, "Do what you love, and love what you do" Even though you love something with a passion, I learned you still have to work very hard at it. It's an ever changing business and the only real constant is change.

A vendor or product that has helped me grow.. so many but probably the one product that has had the most impact for my workflow is Capture One. There are many alternatives, but this product has really made the transition to digital easier to manage.

I'm in awe of..  God and his incredible Universe and of course my beautiful new grandson!  He will be 6 months old next month.

The hardest part of photographing is.. trying to be consistently creative. Every day I have to push myself to try and do something a little different than the day before.

A single factor to my success.. my family.. I am fortunate to have a wife and two beautiful daughters, as well as two awesome son-in-laws who have been very supportive in this business. Not only in helping to build it but in encouragment during the high and lows.

" I have never thought of myself as famous. It is wonderful to have the respect and admiration of peers and there are so many I admire in return. But my goal has always been just to be the absolute best I can be at what I love. If I pick up a few friends and fans along the way, then that is more of a blessing than I deserve."

What I do to unwind..  I love music, especially blues. Movies are always a great way to unwind as well, I have a huge collection. I play guitar as well, although not as often as I would like to.

My weakness is.. Ahh, Blue Bell Vanilla Ice Cream! Hide it when I'm around!

Something  I have never done.... sky diving. It is something I have always wanted to do.

** BluDomain has several outages in the past week with one of our servers (we have many so this is only 1 server to squash any rumors that may get started) and we have been working very closing with hosting through the night. Some of us didn't sleep.  It turns out hosting updated something that is causing our code not take so we are going one by one through each file on that server to rewrite the code to make them in sync.  Very frustating for us as well as you and will take hours for us to do.  So BluDomain is not working on anything today but this. However we now see this server has some downfaults and have worked well through the night to find the bug.  Thank you for being patient.

How long have you been a photographer for... 7 years total.

Where I live..  beautiful, sunny Orange County California!

A piece of equipment that I could never part with.... my 5D and 85 1.8.  I could shoot an entire wedding with that one setup. actually I think I did once shoot a wedding with only that setup!

The advice I give to photographers who are just getting started..  second shoot as much as possible even if you have to do it for free. no amount of classroom learning beats on the job experiences.

Something that is overrated..  shooting RAW. I've nver shot a RAW image in my life which makes me more careful on the job.

A helpful tip that has been useful.. My father always says to "underpromise and overdeliver" I think that is the number one secret of running a successful, referal based business.

What I know..  some days, lots, some days, not so much !

What I know now that I didn't know then.. I know there is a whole lot more than being a photographer than the actual photography.  I'd say being a good photographer is important but a very small part of what makes someone successful and profitable.

A vendor or product that helped me grow... the digital wedding forum.. i've picked up so much good advice there over the years. I also love my Pickpic Carts www.pickpic.com and love the way that they make it so easy for clients to buy prints and other items.

I'm in awe of.. the way becker [b] has built his brand and his word of mouth advertising skillz. I don't  how he's managed to get everyone talking aobut him all the time but I hope my little logo will be as recognizable!

The hardest part of photographing is.. working with people who feel uncomfortable in front of the camera. it is really hard to get people to understand that part of making a good picture has to come from within them. I can't shoot emotion that they are afraid to show, and it's very hard to blend in when they are so camera aware.

A single contributing factor to my success.. booking my first destination wedding. that very first wedding (which when it was all said and done, I probably paid them to shoot it) definitely launched my career as a destination wedding photographer. Almost every job that I have ever booked out of town can be traced back to that one job in some way.

"As far as shooting goes, there is no substitute for really learning your equipment. When you shoot, you shouldn't be thingk about "how do I change that setting?" or "how do I work that again?"  Regarding pricing- you can only charge what you truly believe you are worth. I see a lot of photographers trying to move up in price fail because they can't justify their prices to themselves, and how is a bride supposed to believe in you if you can't? Also, if you want to branch out of your market, don't be afraid to start marketing and booking there before you move- just don't close any doors behind you.  the year i moved to California, I still had 15 weddings back on the East coast already booked, I just sucked it up and flew back for all those weddings on my own dime instead of not booking them in the first place because even with the cost of the ticket I still profited more then if I hadn't shot at all. What I do to unwind... i always take a few extra vacation days when i travel to go to the spa, kick it by the pool or just hang out!

My weakness is.. reality tv. I know it's trashy and stupid but i just love it. i actually tried out for the Real World once, but since i wasn't a minority, gay or seriously emotionally damaged they didn't pick me.

Something i have never done.. skydived or traveled to Europe (no sense in jumping out of a perfectly good plane) but with any luck I'll be in Europe before this year is over!

** The sugar contest is officially kicked off...  men and women giving up SUGAR for 2 weeks to win interface 25 "Renovation"  I had to fix one small detail.  Some people do not receive the newspaper so you don't have to have a newspaper in your photo as I have been taught how to find out if photo was taken in the past week.  Now I have received hundreds of e-mails asking for a "Longer Contest" so people can lose a lot of weight. ** BluDomain has collected a years worth of data.  Anytime someone mentioned another photographer in a "good way" we put a star next to their name.   We finalized the list and it was obvious who other photographers admired, were inspired by, looked up to,  and bragged about.  Now just because you didn't make this years list doesn't mean you weren't on our "Stardom Map"  The map was continuous and lit up our office, we used metallic stars.  We had to cut the list and that is always hard however we are very happy with the results.

**Project Director Aundrea & and her favorite girl Tracie headed to Las Vegas this weekend.  On Aundrea's "To do list in life" fly somewhere for 24 hours. What they did in 24 hours: Ate lunch at Hard Rock Hotel's Pink Taco, gambled by the poolside at Hard Rock Hotel, Had fake eyelashes put on at the MAC counter, shopped at Fashion Show something Mall, ate dinner at The Palm's Nine Steakhouse, had a cocktail at the Ghost Bar, gambled at The Palms, Went to the famous Score's Strip Club (walked out in 30 minutes-lame), went to Cirque Du Soleil's "KA" at MGM,  taxi's, taxi's, taxi's, danced the rest of the night at Forty Duece in Mandalay Bay, slept for 2 hours and off to the airport.  I'm exhausted just hearing about their crazy trip.

Something that is overrated..  Photoshop.. when used to compensate for shoddy photography

What I know..  I am in love with what I do

What I know now that I didn't know then.. you don't need the high-end bride to get high-end wedding sales

A vendor or product that has helped me grow... large wall prints have enabled us to sell the epic images we are known for, and encourages us to grow in finding and creating these shots.

I'm in awe of.. female photographers who can shoot a whole day in heels

The hardest part of photographing is.. trying to kick Dave's ass when we shoot together.

A piece of equipment that I could never part with...  Gerber Multitool (Quin gave it to me as gift 10 years ago when we were dating) Has gotten me outta more binds then I care to recall

What advice do you have for photographers who are just getting started?  Go sell diamonds or wait tables;  Educate yourself in how to get people to open up, smile and like you. You can always learn the nuts and bolts of camera widgets later.

Something that is overrated.. targeting the "High End" bride

A helpful tip that has been useful..  It's always better to be a human being than a human doing.

What I know.. that I have a LOT to learn in life, and am really really blessed to be doing what I'm doing for a living

What I know now that I didn't know then..  people will throw money at me if I can make them fall in love with themselves, my work and me.

I'm in awe of... my brother, Ace and his wife Cecilia.  He's a doctor; she's an MBA. They've been called to become missionaries and they're leaving with their two young girls for Niger, Africa in September to state a traveling medical mission. When we first started off, we were given the opportunity to shoot with and learn from a very gracious and giving local wedding photographer. I used to always ask him, "Why are you always helping us out?"  His reply: "You can never out-give God." Words I live by.

The advice I have for photographers who are just getting started...  Work hard on your photography skills but even harder on marketing you biz, don't be afraid to take risks (educated ones), set goals, be decisive, be efficient, keep God and family first, get involved in the industry and meet as many people as possible, be cool to other photographers and help them out, be honest in every business transaction and interfaction, give generously to to those in need and support your church and great charities like Thirst Relief International www.thirstrelief.org

A helpful tip that has been useful.. Give first without expecting in return. Stay true to who you are and carve your own path.

What I know.. life is short!

One thing I have never done.. illegal drugs, skydiving (I did bungee jump once in New Zealand), shown up on time to a party

One time I.. stayed up 72 hours without sleeping, forgot to bring my compact flash cards to a wedding, had 2 active warrants out for my arrest for a friendly prank that went bad, was knocked unconscious snowboarding (also broke my leg once snowboarding), snuck a gun across the mexican border without getting caught, surfed giant waves in Baja and lived (barely), was hit by a speeding car while jaywalking- flew through the air- landed on my feet- and walked away uninjured, hit the side of the pool while doing a backflip and go t 18 stitches, body-surfed a 25 foot wave at the Wedge and got pitched from top to bottom for the wipe-out of my life, went free diving for piranha's in the Amazon River, was hired by a promoter to photograph a dozen bloody fights insde the cage for a huge "no rules" cage fighting tournament.  All 100% true.
